In the end, they hardly needed persuading.

Erik strolled onto the base, broke into Stryker's office and greeted him as he returned from lunch. He explained that the school was under his protection and he was prepared to come to an agreement to avoid more of Stryker's men ending up in the infirmary - or worse.

There would be no more incursions. There would be no experiments. But Erik was prepared to eliminate the last of the Nazi threat from the planet in exchange for Stryker staying the Hell away from his family and the school.

The unspoken threat that Erik could reach Stryker and his son at any time of the day or night helped his cause, no doubt, but Stryker signed the deal without more than a phone call.

Erik would leave for Europe the next day. But, first, he had to say goodbye.

"I'll write," Erik says, on a whim, though he has no idea how he'll achieve such a feat. The last thing on his mind will be postage stamps.

"I don't know how long it will take," he confesses. "With the targets they have named...perhaps a year."

A year is a horrendously long time, longer than Charles had been imagining, and he knows he fails in hiding his anguish from his face and his mind.

"What will you tell the boys?" He asks, to try and change the subject, keep the conversation going. He will not fight Erik on this, he knows he will not win.

Erik feels Charles' despair, and moves away from their intimate embrace to pace the room, tense and anxious.

"The truth, of course," he says. He has never lied to them. "Baby Scott will not understand the whole of it, but he must know it all."

"Have a care, Erik..." Charles frowns. He wants his lover to do what is best for him, whatever will return his serenity to him. But he must think of Scott, as well, and he is not so sure that the truth is always the best policy.

"He cries when you leave for the weekend with the boys. He won't cope with knowing how long you're leaving for this time. A year is an eternity when you're as young as he is."

"And have him wait at the window every night?"

In truth, Erik doesn't know what to do for the best. He remembers desperately hoping to see him mother again. And then he saw her - saw her shot dead.

[guideshapelead]

"You think I won't be doing any different?" Charles points out, remark more cutting than he had intended.

"I will wait at the window, Erik. You cannot expect our son not to do the same."

[diecastking]

Erik rubs at his forehead, wishing the pain would disappear from his heart.

"I am doing this so that you can live your lives, without fear," he says, trying to make Charles understand. "What use is it if you will not live?"

"Would you carry on, in my place?" Charles asks pointedly. He understands what Erik is trying to say, but these things are always easier said than done. How is he supposed to go on living, when the greatest part of his life is gone?

[diecastking]

"I have always carried on," Erik says stiffly. "I have hated my life at times, but I have always lived it, even when the Brooklyn Bridge seemed more inviting."

He turns to Charles. "You have the school. You have our son. You have to carry on now."

[guideshapelead]

Charles is quiet for a long while, knowing the truth in what Erik says but not liking it one bit. It takes a lot for him to finally speak again.

"I will, Erik. For you."

[diecastking]

"That is all I can ask of you," Erik says, softly.

"I will find my way home, liebe. I will fight to be with you again."

[guideshapelead]

"Come and say that over here," Charles says, feeling the distance as Erik continues to pace.

"Kiss me and tell me that again."

[diecastking]

Erik comes close and sits astride Charles' lap, taking his face between his hands.

"I will find my way home, liebe," he murmurs. "I will fight to be with you again".

And then he kisses him - a promise.

"I know you will," Charles finally gives up his own fight.

"I know you will, Erik."

[diecastking]

Erik kisses him again, trying to soothe with his body the pain caused by his words.

If only he could win this war without hurting them - but the fight has never been without cost.

[guideshapelead]

"We still have tonight," Charles points out, forehead back against Erik's.

"I don't want to waste it arguing. There is no point."

[diecastking]

"Then we shall have a night that cannot be forgotten," Erik promises, kissing Charles deeply and passionately.

[guideshapelead]

There are so many more things that Charles could say, requests to be remembered, thought about, when Erik is gone... but he keeps those thoughts safely locked away. They have moved on from that, now.

//I love you// he sends instead.

When they are this close, as close as two men can be, nothing is truly hidden - and Erik feels something deep and secret from Charles, a bittersweet longing.

He wants to comfort, but he cannot tell the wound.

Instead, he says, "I love you, liebe."

[guideshapelead]

"We should... we shouldn't waste this evening," Charles says, firmly, making himself push Erik away so they each have their own space.

"It's not so late, yes. There is time for dinner, and... things afterwards."

[diecastking]

"Things afterwards?" Erik says innocently, not beyond a little teasing. "Perhaps chess? Or I might read you a bedtime story?"

[guideshapelead]

"You know precisely what I mean, Erik," Charles bristles.

"You are being cruel. On purpose."

[diecastking]

Erik kisses the side of Charles' neck.

"Perhaps I just like to hear you say it."

[guideshapelead]

"I want to sit down to dinner with you. Then we should take tea here, in our drawing room, before going up to bed. Where I don't intend to sleep." Charles frowns, feeling already as though he's been overly crude.

[diecastking]

"I like dinner," Erik says amicably. "I like tea, though I prefer coffee. I like our bed."

He leans closer. "And I like fucking you until you scream, liebe. Or rocking slowly inside you until you beg me to let you come."
